Summer Fun with MIRL
How could you not love summertime? Getting together with friends, BBQing, concerts under the stars, baseball, sailing, fishing, hiking, tubing, beach trips, bonfires and those long weekend holidays are the stuff dreams are made of.

But wait a minute. What if your friends do NONE of the above? Or, what if work or life has taken you away from your old buddies, and you're looking for new friends? We want to encourage you to break out of a rut and find new friends and activity partners on MIRL this summer!

Don't get me wrong, old friends are often the dearest. As they taught me in Brownies (girls' equivalent of the Cub Scouts), "make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold." But getting into new hobbies with a new group will give you a fresh perspective, can be a path to self-discovery, and who knows? You could meet the love of your life.

Every person you come in contact with knows hundreds of people, so every new friend you make on MIRL has the potential to introduce you to so many new things (a.k.a. "The Kevin Bacon Effect").

As a single twenty-something living alone in Washington, DC, I met new people through work, roommates, and joining volunteer organizations. But it wasn't until I used an online tool like MIRL, found an ad for a skipper in need of crew for his sailboat, and started competitive sailboat racing that I really met a new group of people. I got to know my now-husband better through my sailboat racing hobby, and it eventually led me to relocate to the Annapolis area. I can truly say that responding to that one online post has changed my life forever!

So do yourself a favor and branch out with MIRL. Check out my tips for having an extravagant beach weekend for next to nothing, my post on finding your ideal running partner or my thoughts on how to make female friends for life to get the creative juices flowing, post a MIRL and get out there! Get into a new hobby, or rediscover one you've left behind. Make 2011 the best summer of your life!

I would love to hear "success stories" from anyone who has used MIRL to get out of a rut and make new friends. Please message me or post a comment here, I would love to hear from you.
